How does the Shopify theme detector work?

Our tool fetches the store's homepage like a regular browser and reads the public metadata Shopify exposes in the source.

Every Shopify storefront publicly declares a Shopify.theme JavaScript object containing the active theme's name, ID and role. We parse this signature, along with the asset paths served from cdn.shopify.com, to identify the theme.

If the merchant has stripped these signals or runs a fully custom storefront (headless, Hydrogen, private theme), only the theme ID may be available. Either way, no URL is stored — every lookup is ephemeral.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell which Shopify theme a store is using?+

Paste the store URL into our detector. We read the Shopify.theme object publicly exposed by Shopify and return the theme name, ID, and a Theme Store link when available.

Does the tool work with every Shopify theme?+

It works with every theme from the Shopify Theme Store and most custom themes. Headless storefronts (Hydrogen, Next.js on the Storefront API) may not expose this metadata.

Is the theme detector really free?+

Yes — 100% free, no signup, no browser extension required.

Do you store the URLs I analyze?+

No. Lookups are ephemeral and URLs are never persisted. We only keep an anonymous per-IP counter to prevent abuse.

The detected theme doesn't match what I expected. Why?+

The merchant likely renamed or heavily customized the theme. The Theme Store ID, when present, remains a reliable way to find the original theme.
